How This Directory Is Organised

Every service listed here is a free, confidential Australian helpline — no referral, Medicare card, or diagnosis needed to call. Search by keyword above, or use the category filters to narrow the list. A few categories worth knowing about:

Crisis

Immediate, 24/7 support for suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or acute distress — Lifeline (13 11 14) and the Suicide Call Back Service (1300 659 467) are staffed around the clock, every day of the year.

Youth (5–25)

Kids Helpline and headspace are built specifically for children, teens and young adults, with counsellors trained in school, identity, and family issues young people face.

Domestic & Family Violence

1800RESPECT supports anyone experiencing or at risk of domestic, family or sexual violence — including a text and online chat option for when it isn't safe to call.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander

13YARN is staffed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander crisis supporters, for a culturally safe space to yarn about how you're feeling.

LGBTIQ+

QLife provides peer support and referral specifically for LGBTIQ+ people, their families and allies, by phone and webchat.

Multilingual

Need support in a language other than English? The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National, 131 450) connects you to an interpreter for any of the helplines above, in 170+ languages, 24/7 — see our multicultural support page for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these helplines really free?
Yes — every service listed is free to call from any Australian phone, including mobiles, and none require a referral, Medicare card, or existing diagnosis. Some may show as a local call on older phone plans, but the service itself charges nothing.
What if the helpline I need isn't listed here?
Try the search box above first — it searches service names and descriptions, not just categories. Our All Support Services directory covers a wider range of topics (financial, housing, legal, veterans and more) beyond the mental-health-focused list here.
Is my search or call tracked?
Searching and filtering on this page happens entirely in your browser — we don't log what you search for. Calling a helpline connects you directly with that service; we have no visibility into or affiliation with the call itself.
How we verify this directory (last checked 10 October 2026)

On 10 October 2026 we checked every entry above against the service’s own website or an Australian Government page: the phone number, opening hours, the ways to contact them, and what the service says about interpreters or languages. Where a service did not state something, we say “not stated” rather than guess. Where we could not confirm something, we say so on the card.

Services change their hours and numbers, sometimes without notice. Please confirm with the service itself, and call 000 in an emergency. This directory is general information only — it is not medical advice, and listing a service is not an endorsement. We are not affiliated with any service listed. Services marked “not a crisis service” may have wait times; for urgent help call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000.

We plan to re-check every entry at least every 6 months. If you find something out of date, please tell us through the About page.
